Teas for a Better Night's Sleep

An evening cup doesn't have to keep you up. How to choose the gentlest, lowest-caffeine teas and brew them so they soothe rather than stir.

A warm cup is one of the oldest ways to tell the body that the day is over. The hands slow, the room quiets, and something in you begins to let go before the first sip.

The trick, in the evening, is to choose a tea that settles you rather than one that switches you back on, and then to brew it gently enough that it stays on your side.

An honest note on caffeine

Every tea we sell is a true tea, made from the leaf of Camellia sinensis, and every true tea carries some caffeine. We do not currently make the caffeine-free blossom tisanes, the chamomiles and chrysanthemums, that some people reach for at the very edge of sleep. So let us be straight about it. If you need a cup with zero caffeine in the last hour before you turn out the light, a true tea is not the answer, and a caffeine-free herbal would be.

What a gentle, well-timed, lightly brewed cup can do is help you change gears earlier in the evening. It marks the close of the working day, warms your hands, and gives you a few unhurried minutes to slow down. That is a real part of winding down, and it is the part this guide can honestly help with.

What this guide can and cannot promise

We will not pretend a tea is decaf when it is not. Instead it does three honest things: it points you to the calmest, lowest-stimulation leaves we carry, it shows you how to brew them so they stay soft, and it leans on the part that matters most after dark, the wind-down ritual itself.

柔What to reach for

The gentlest leaves after dark

In traditional Chinese medicine, the warming, grounding teas are the ones you reach for when energy feels scattered and the body wants an anchor. Those same teas tend to drink low and round in the evening. Three of ours suit the hour particularly well.

  • ·Yunnan Crown Select Pu-erh. Slowly aged and naturally fermented, ripe pu-erh is the classic after-dinner cup in China. It pours a deep reddish brown, drinks earthy and mellow, and feels the most settling of all our true teas. The traditional, grounding way to end a meal.
  • ·Ember Crown Select Dark Oolong. A long charcoal roast turns this high-mountain oolong warm, toasty, and sweet. Low in sharpness and gentle on the stomach, it is a comforting cup for a cold or quiet night, round rather than bright.
  • ·Huatan Select Jasmine. The lightest of the three, and best taken earlier in the evening rather than right before bed. Brewed cool and short, its sweet floral character soothes without much push, a softer green for the first part of the wind-down.
The best evening tea is not the strongest cup of the day. It is the one that lets you put the day down.

泡Keep the cup soft

Brew it gentler

Your hands hold the dial. The same leaf can wake you or wind you down depending on how you treat it. To keep an evening cup soft, ease off on every lever at once.

  • ·Use less leaf. Both caffeine and intensity track with how much leaf is in the pot, so scale down from your daytime measure. A lighter hand is the simplest way to a quieter cup.
  • ·Cool the water. The jasmine already asks for 70 to 80°C. Let even the pu-erh and the roasted oolong settle off a full boil. Cooler water extracts more gently.
  • ·Keep steeps short. A quick first infusion is lighter than a long one. Pour early, taste, and add a few seconds only if you want more, rather than over-steeping into bitterness.
  • ·Time it earlier. The kindest move of all is the clock. Finish your cup a few hours before bed so the caffeine has time to fade well before you do.

Does a rinse make it decaf? Mostly no.

A quick rinse, pouring hot water over the leaves and tipping it away before you brew, is worth doing to wake rolled leaves and clear dust. But caffeine is highly water-soluble and keeps releasing across every infusion, so a short rinse sheds only a small fraction. It is a nice ritual, not a way to make a true tea caffeine-free.

静Slow it all down

The wind-down ritual

More than any single leaf, it is the ritual that readies you for sleep. The warmth, the small repeated motions, the few minutes with nothing to do but wait for the tea. Build a short sequence and let it become the signal your body learns.

  1. 壶

    Choose a small vessel

    A little pot or a covered cup keeps the pour modest and the caffeine in check. Tonight the point is the gesture, not the volume.

  2. 暖

    Warm your hands and the cup

    Rinse the empty cup with hot water first. The warmth that gathers in your palms is part of the settling.

  3. 暗

    Put the screens away

    Dim the lights and set the phone down before the first sip. Let the cup be the only thing asking for your attention.

  4. 饮

    Steep light, sip slow

    Brew gently, pour early, and drink without rushing. Breathe between sips. This is the part of the evening that belongs to no one else.

  5. 时

    Stop a few hours before bed

    Treat the last cup as a marker that the day is closing, not a nightcap. Let plain water carry you the rest of the way to sleep.

Common questions

Is any tea you sell caffeine-free?

No. Every tea in our range is a true tea, made from the leaf of Camellia sinensis, so each one carries some caffeine. We do not currently make caffeine-free blossom tisanes. If you need a genuinely zero-caffeine cup right before bed, a herbal tisane such as chamomile is the honest answer, not a true tea.

What is the best tea before bed?

Of the teas we carry, an aged ripe pu-erh like our Yunnan Crown Select is the gentlest, mellow and grounding and traditionally taken after dinner. A deeply roasted dark oolong is a close, comforting second. Brew either one lightly and earlier in the evening rather than at the very edge of sleep, and leave a comfortable buffer before bed.

Does a rinse really remove the caffeine?

Mostly no. A ten to fifteen second rinse sheds only a small fraction, because caffeine dissolves readily and keeps releasing across every infusion. Rinsing is worth doing to wake the leaves and clear dust, but it will not turn a true tea into a decaf one.

How late can I drink tea?

That depends on your own body, since everyone clears caffeine at a different rate. As a safe habit, finish your last cup a good few hours before bed. If caffeine touches your sleep at all, leave a wider gap, brew the cup light, and lean on the lowest-stimulation leaves like ripe pu-erh.

Do you sell chamomile or herbal sleep blends?

Not currently. Our whole range is single-origin true tea, and we would rather be honest than point you to something we do not make. For the calmest cup we do offer, reach for a lightly brewed ripe pu-erh or roasted oolong earlier in the evening, and save the true zero-caffeine herbals for the last hour before sleep.
